How therapy might help you
Sometimes in life when you experience challenging or difficult times, it can help to discuss you or your child’s emotions, thought patterns and behaviour with a professional who sits outside that situation.
A psychologist will help by taking the time to listen and understand exactly where you need help, pulling together a formulation and some suggestions for moving forward.
Areas where difficulties often arise include:
Stress arising from a change in routine or challenges at work/school/college
Living with grief, loss or bereavement
Challenges in managing a chronic physical illness
Social anxiety or avoidant behaviour
Emotional and cognitive symptoms alongside major hormonal shifts e.g. puberty, menopause
Depression, or low mood
Anxiety, worry or feelings of panic
Difficulties with self esteem, or lack of confidence
Problematic coping strategies and emotional dysregulation
Neurodiverse affirmative support
Sleep problems
Personal, family and relationship difficulties e.g. sibling conflict, friendship shifts
Living with chronic pain
Preparation for medical or surgical procedures
I use evidence-based talking therapies, e.g. ACT, to try to help with dilemmas that individuals and/or families may be struggling with. For children and adults, the collaborative work in sessions focuses on client strengths and building tools to help with moving forward.
The practice specialises in helping people to live well with chronic conditions that impact their physical and mental health, and the interaction between the two across the lifespan.
What happens in a session?
I offer sessions for individuals or, if appropriate, family members together, both in person and online. In the case of those under 18 years old, sessions can be directly with the child or young person, or parent-only consultations.
At the initial meeting, I will take a full history of the presenting problem or difficulties. This assessment session aims to explore current problem(s), identify some goals, or ways that you would like life to be different and offer some reflections and possible strategies for going forward – an important formulation process central to psychological therapy. I will also give an idea of how many sessions might be needed, in the light of talking through what you would like to see change.
How much does a session cost?
Consultations can take place in person or online. After an initial consultation in clinic, walk & talk sessions are also possible. Therapy consultation sessions are usually sixty minutes long and are charged at £125 per session, payable on booking.
Please note that clients are liable for any additional charges e.g. report writing, travel to and from session as relevant and in the case of insurance, any fees not covered by the insurer. The number of sessions required to help facilitate change can vary from as little one to two sessions to a longer period, depending on what you are hoping to see change in your life, and how best that might be achieved.
