FAQs

What is the difference between a counsellor, psychologist, psychotherapist and psychiatrist?

A counsellor has participated in a counselling training programme, and then registered with one of the counselling organisations. They are trained in listening and other counselling skills, to provide a supportive environment for the client to talk through their issues.

A psychotherapist in the UK will usually have undertaken a higher qualification, specifically focused on psychotherapy.  They will be registered to practice within the ethical guidelines of a psychotherapeutic organisation such as UKCP.  A registered psychotherapist will have at least four years post graduate qualification, including experience of working in different settings, e.g. primary care, forensic and schools.  A psychotherapist is trained to work at a deep psychological level, with a solid awareness of self knowledge, empathy and relationship skills.  A psychotherapist will often undertake long term work with clients.

A chartered counselling psychologist will have a degree in psychology and an extensive (minimum six years) evidence-based training, leading to doctoral qualification, in psychology and the talking therapies.  They are registered with the British Psychological Society and adhere to their ethical guidelines and also with the HCPC, The Health & Care Professions Council.  A psychologist is not a medical doctor and therefore not qualified to prescribe medication.  They may or may not be trained as a psychotherapist, but will have a deep understanding and model of the psychological functioning of humans.

A psychiatrist has trained as a medical physician and then chosen to specialise within the mental health field.  As a medical practitioner they are able to prescribe medication, and will be well placed to help decide if a combination of medication/talking therapy is helpful.  A psychiatrist may or may not also be trained as a psychotherapist.

Do I need a referral from a GP for an individual consultation?

No, you can just contact me directly to discuss an appointment.  However, it is usually a good idea to let your GP know how you are feeling as well, as they will be able to help support you and have your full medical history.  You can also self-refer to the NHS counselling service Improving Access to Psychological Therapies, by searching for IAPT and your postcode to give your local service.

Where are the sessions based?

They are based either in person in Winchester, Hampshire or they can be held online, or a mixture of both. After the initial consultation, it is also usually possible to do walk & talk therapy.

What is an evidence-based treatment?

Evidence-based treatment is the integration of clinical expertise/ expert opinion, best research evidence and client/ caregiver values to provide high-quality services reflecting the interests, values, needs and choices of the individuals we serve. Ultimately the goal of evidence-based practice is providing optimal clinical service to clients on an individual basis.

How much does a session cost?

Sessions can take place in person or online.  The cost is £125 for a sixty minute consultation. Please note that there is no charge for an initial telephone consultation. The number of sessions required to help facilitate change can vary from as little as a one-off session to several sessions, and we make a plan together during the initial assessment session.

There will be a charge for any clinically related report writing/email/telephone conversation but this will be agreed prior to work being undertaken.

Is this a confidential service?

All of the conversations and sessions that you have with me are kept strictly confidential. The exceptions to this are if you say something that entails a risk or danger to yourself or to others (including safeguarding of children, young people or vulnerable adults), or if I become concerned you may be at risk of harm from others. If this was to occur, I would speak to you first and together come up with a plan as to who would ‘need to know’ e.g. your GP, and how we would best inform them. This would not be done behind your back but always with your knowledge.

Do you offer urgent appointments?

No, Psychological does not offer last minute or emergency appointments – if you have immediate concerns about you or your child’s thoughts, behaviour and feelings, please contact your GP or out of hours/A&E service. Other useful contacts:

What is Psychological’s cancellation policy?

Psychological operates a 48-hour notice period if you need to cancel a session. Any sessions cancelled with less than 48-hour notice will be charged in full. If you are unable to get to your appointment, I can offer you an online session at the same time.

If you have paid for your session, and need to cancel with more than 48-hours notice, I will issue you with a full refund.
